The Active School Flag
This year, we are working towards getting an Active School Flag for our school. The aim of the Active School Flag is to encourage schools to be more active, more often. It links in with all of the work we are doing throughout the year on healthy living - being active, getting exercise, taking care of our minds and bodies.
We have set up:
- Active School Committee
- Active School Class Reps
- Active Bainsteoir Beag Members. Every September sixth class students are trained to be “Bainisteoir Beag”. They then organise activities and games for the younger classes at lunchtime.
- Active School Slogan
- New equipment has been ordered and labelled
- Timetabled equipment on yard and music on yard during the month of May
Activities in the school:
This year's priority PE strand is gymnastics.
We have many active activities across the school: athletics, aquatics, dance, orienteering, cycling, army bootcamp, yoga, boxing, cricket, hurling and FAI Soccer.
We also have active lines - junior classes on Wednesdays and senior classes on Thursdays.
New Active School Walkway
Every Wednesday children are encouraged to be active at home for Wellness Wednesday.
In June every year, the children only get active homework
Every year we complete the Medieval Mile Challenge, for the month of November the whole school practices to complete the run in early December. The classes complete the 12 days of Fitmas fitness challenge also culminating in a Santa Jumper Run which we linked with a fundraiser for Temple Street this year and we raised vital funds.
We celebrate Active School's Week and we have an annual Sports Day.
.
We also work with many local agencies; Freebooters, Army Camp, O Loughlins GAA club ,GPO Games development, Kilkenny GAA, City Harriers.
