Here at St. John’s Senior School every child from 3rd to 6th class has the opportunity to get involved in the Music programme where we offer tuition in violin, cello, recorder and percussion. These lessons take place on a weekly basis in school with Cathy & Ann Marie Kenny, both fully qualified music teachers, who have been teaching Music in St. John’s for the past 20 years.
Our aim is to teach music in a fun and enjoyable way, building confidence while also providing the opportunity to perform at social events. According to studies children who play an instrument benefit in other areas of the curriculum, especially Maths and English.
The school orchestra performs at the Lions Club fund-raising concert each year in St. Canice’s Cathedral as well as at Christmas Carol Services and school concerts. Every child in the school performs with the school choir, which rehearse every week, in preparation for school events – concerts, confirmation etc. For the past number of years, St. John’s Senior School have participated in the Peace Proms, where some 500 children from the South East perform with an orchestra in Cillin Hill.
The school’s programme has also encouraged many students to continue their studies into secondary school with many of them opting to take Music as a subject for their Junior & Leaving Certificate.
